| Virginia citizens are more interested in growing their own food and caring for their personal landscape than ever before. The Henry County/Martinsville Virginia Cooperative Extension is committed to helping citizens know more about maintaining a healthy home environment, creating sustainable rural or urban landscapes, protecting water resources, growing a garden, and properly managing pests and wildlife. The horticulture agent, and master gardener volunteers work to provide training, information, and science-based answers homeowners need. What will make this plant grow better? How can it be guarded against disease or insect damage? How can we protect and improve the soil? For the answers to questions such as these, you've come to the right place and we can help!

| | Is it a Fruit or Vegetable?
Pumpkin, fruit or vegetable? Tomato, fruit or vegetable? To really figure out if a tomato is a fruit or vegetable, you need to know what makes a fruit a fruit, and a vegetable a vegetable. A Fruit is the edible part of the plant that contains the seeds. A Vegetable is the edible stems, leaves, and roots of the plant. SO...the big question to ask is, DOES IT HAVE SEEDS? If the answer is yes, then technically, you have a FRUIT. This, of course, makes your tomato a fruit. It also makes cucumbers, squash, green beans and walnuts all fruits as well. VEGETABLES such as, radishes, celery, carrots, and lettuce do NOT have seeds (that are part of what we eat) and so they are grouped as vegetables. |
